Having announced my goal for the year, and officially getting accepted, here are the things I am looking for in my RRP horse. I know that to meet all these criteria may not be possible so I expect to compromise on something. But, it is always fun to have a dream horse checklist in hand while I go look. Who knows maybe I will find a unicorn that meets all of these criteria!
  • SOUND - I went against my gut when I bought Val and I'm not making that mistake again! I need a horse that is undeniably sound.
  • Jumping Bloodlines - obviously a horse that has bloodlines that are known to be good jumpers is what I'm after. I don't really care if the horse wants to be a hunter or jumper, but jumping is what I do so I want a horse that will be inclined towards that discipline.
  • Slow Legged - this means that I want a horse that is maybe a little slower to react or get going. Thoroughbreds are pretty sensitive anyway so a slower one is the perfect balance for me. And a slower TB makes for an easier resell.
  • 16.1-17 Hands - I'm 6' tall so getting anything smaller I would look huge on and once they hit 17+hh I feel like they are harder to sell and just have too much body to know what to do with.
  • Cute Face & Personality- I want to fall in love with their face! I want to gush over them everyday, and let's face it (pun not intended) some horses don't have the cutest faces. And I want a horse with a snuggly, happy personality to be able to bond with and enjoy being around.
  • Mare or Gelding - I don't really care either way here, but I'm leaning towards a mare. I understand them and have loved every one I've ever ridden. But, I know a mare is harder to sell so I'm open to a gelding as well.
  • Any Color - I definitely don't care what color the horse is, but I would die to get a dark dappled grey! I don't care about having to keep them clean, they are just so pretty!
  • Not Expensive - unfortunately my budget is very small! I know that this will definitely limit my options, but searching for unicorns is never easy.
  • Versatile - I want a horse I could feel confident doing anything on! I want them brave but chill for anything from cross country to beach riding to learning new disciplines.

That's good to know because I have been asking myself a lot of those same questions.

When you find the right one you will know it, trust your gut and instincts, you will find the right one
